For years, fans have read tales from the empire of Helium and the exploits of its princess, Dejah Thoris. Dejah has been a competent leader and adventurer, and in “Dejah Thoris #0” by Dynamite Comics we’re introduced to a young princess on the verge of her first adventure in the vast Martian wastelands.

Writer Amy Chu introduces us to Barsoom, a planet rich in resources and natural wonder. She also tells us of the Martian races, the Orovar and the Okar, compelled to join forces once the planet’s bountiful natural resources depleted to preserve and hold on to their way of life. They became known as the Reds, of which Dejah and her family descended. Dejah soon realizes that her people are in conflict with the Greens when her father and grandfather reveal secret areas in the royal compound that she had never seen before. Dejah has her own secrets within the compound too, and the stage is set for her very first adventure.

Amy’s writing introduces the reader to an interesting world with a great history that’s ripe for adventures to unfold in. The story has a nice progression that never feels rushed and lays out key points in an easy, organic manner.

Cezar Razek’s artwork is likewise well thought out and masterfully drawn. Barsoom’s lush past comes to life in his line work, and the barren desert during the time of the story will make you swear you can feel the sun beating down on your as you walk the dried out and depleted planet. Some of the credit for that has to go to Valentina Pinto’s inks. Her coloring is beautiful and brings Razek’s art to the next level.

The cover by Jay Anacleto and Rain Beredo makes this book a real stunner that begs to be opened and read. A print of this would look great framed and hung on any comic fan’s wall.

Dejah Thoris #0 is a solid book and a great introduction to a new series by Dynamite Comics. New tales of Helium’s princess are on the horizon, and this comic blazes the trail to them.
