Joseph A. McCullough and Osprey Games have done it again, with this latest addition to their burgeoning Frostgrave line (available in June 2017.) Tabletop miniature wargaming is rarely THIS cool. With an outer box measuring a scant 5.62″ x 4″ x 0.75″ this diminutive Frostgrave expansion packs a wallop whilst being easy on the eyes; no Lilliputian feat, that.
Of particular interest is the exquisite design of both the box and its contents. Much time and effort was put into the development of this Frostgrave expansion and it shows. The cards themselves score high marks for background art (ye olde parchment paper) and durability (stronger than the average playing card.)
Red herrings as a game mechanic is rarely seen in tabletop games. It’s a notable cog of the Ulterior Motives expansion though, as its players will soon see. After all, what’s a little deception between friends? This expansion’s red herrings include an arcane disc, a gateway, a pit, a runic stone, a sarcophagus, a statue, a trapdoor, and a zombie.
Inspired writing is another strength of the Ulterior Motives expansion, as evidenced by the Strike A Match card (“The Scout returned, visibly shaken by what he’d seen in the shack. He said the walls inside were covered in scrolls bearing strange images and writing. He spoke of dark gods and mumbled names found only in forbidden books. There is power and knowledge there, but you made up your mind quickly – some things man was not meant to know. The shack must be destroyed.”)
Highly recommended for Frostgrave players and DMs / GMs of tabletop rpgs in search of a swift inspiration for their sessions.
The press release reads:
“Rather than a book, Ulterior Motives consists of forty Ulterior Motive cards, which add variety, depth, and new tactical challenges to wargames in the Frozen City. Each card presents players with a specific task to accomplish and offers them rewards if they succeed. Some of these missions must be revealed to all of the players, others must be kept secret. Will your wizard seek to slay a great demon? Rescue a desperate captive? Bring retribution to an enemy? All wizards seek power, but what are their ulterior motives? …more than just a collection of missions and scenarios, Ulterior Motives offers players something deeper. For the Frozen City harbors many secrets, and not all of them are ancient. While most adventurers who brave the dangers seek wealth and lost magic, some journey into Frostgrave for more person reasons…”
