Guest Review by Eric Bloat

Anno Dracula 1895:  Seven Days in Mayhem written by Kim Newman, art by Paul McCaffrey, released by Titan Comics is the first Comic Book entry in a long running, alternative history of fictional novels to Bram Stoker’s Dracula where the heroes of the Stoker’s Dracula failed to defeat the titular vampire villain.  In this fictional timeline Dracula goes on to grow in power and eventually takes over Great Britain, allowing vampires to come out of the shadow and dominate society.

To understand exactly where Seven Days in Mayhem fits into the Anno Dracula chronology, it’s easiest to look at the fictional timeline as opposed to the release date timeline.

This epic, time-hopping series, all written by Mr. Kim Newman, follows Dracula for more than a century as he bites his way around the world and back again.  The entire time, he interacts with both fictional and real historical characters and persons in their time periods.  Some appearing are:  Baron Meinster, Kurt Barlow, Barnabas Collins, Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Lestat de Lioncourt, Doctor Moreau, Allan Quatermain, The Lone Ranger, Abraham Van Helsing, Billy The Kid, Bram Stoker, Orson Welles, and Jack the Ripper and that’s not even scratching the surface!

All of this back story sounds daunting and it would be except this comic does an amazing job of giving the reader just enough info they need and then starts them down a path that will leave them longing for the story to continue.

In the comic itself we begin with a massive, multi-nation naval battle featuring the likes of Thomas Edison, where soldier in war ships do battle with giant vampire bats, mermaids, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, scorpions and so much more.

Next we swept away to Soho, London and introduced to our this issues main protagonists, The Council of The Seven Days, an eclectic anarchist group formed to supplant Dracula and undo some of the evil he has caused.  However, all is not as it seems . . .

Titan Comics and Kim Newman knocked it out of the park with entry into the Anno Dracula series.  The writing, the art, the design, the lettering, are all top notch.  Pick up your copy today!
