Star Trek: TOS Season 1 Episode 1 “The Man Trap” Review – Memories Written in Stars

“The Man Trap” introduces us to the elements which make Star Trek: The Original Series so great. I’m talking about the relationships between main characters. We see Uhura flirting with Spock, Yeoman Rand casually eating from Sulu’s tray, and some classic exchanges between Kirk and McCoy. This episode sets up and establishes these relationships while contending with the “monster of the week” plot.

I spent the hour in a live chat with Multiverse Editor Chandra Reyer. We do this every Friday at 8:30 pm PST. You are welcome to join us! Here are a few of my favorite moments from that chat.

As I re-watch the shows, I see finer details. Like Kirk also eating a meal on the bridge near the end of the episode. I suppose the Captain has to eat sometime. I also noticed the green blood from Spock’s injury. I don’t think we can take for granted small details like these. They all establish the world within the series.

This week we will be watching “Charlie X”

A Father Encourages a Love of Astronomy

I also wanted to use this series to talk about my dad. When I was a kid, we would use our telescope in the backyard to look at the stars. We didn’t see much because of the light pollution in Los Angeles. This all changed in 19866 when Halley’s Comet came around. My family would take a yearly trip to Las Vegas with close family friends. That year, we stopped at Death Valley and watched the comet from the valley floor in pitch blackness. The sea of objects which greeted my eyes could not be forgotten.

I can say with certainty that the time with my father behind the telescope and my interest in Star Trek inspired my love of astronomy. I wanted to explore space, not as an astronaut but as a scientist. My family encouraged me in this regard and let me take out any books from the library that I wanted. I read “A Brief History of Time” at the age of 10 or 11.
