It’s been a little like Christmas lately with the increase in documentaries regarding tabletop role playing games. It was only a matter of time before one covering the long history of art in Dungeons & Dragons was made. That it has a wonderfully punny title is just a bonus. There’s a lot of rich material for XRay Films and Cavegirl Productions to mine for a documentary such as Eye of the Beholder: The Art of Dungeons and Dragons. Much has been written about the creation of Dungeons & Dragons and the history of TSR, but the history and stories behind a lot of the art has had to be pieced together from various art books put out by the artists themselves.
The teaser trailer looks promising, but the subject to me seems like it would be almost too much to cover in a single documentary. I look forward to hearing stories more than a gloss over of the large store of art that is associated with D&D and often left an impression on many of the players.
