With all the resonance and reverberation of a thunderclap, Valiant Comics unleashed Part One of their Bloodshot Island story arc. Does it take place in a strange abandoned facility, or on an island? You decide! Fans of such films as BATTLE ROYALE, PREDATOR, and THE CONDEMNED will find that this tale fits like a comfy pair of well-worn slippers. There’s even an appearance by Bloodsquirt!
Writer Jeff Lemire (SWEET TOOTH, ANIMAL MAN) and artist Mico Suayan (MOON KNIGHT, THOR) join forces with colorist David Baron (52, PLANETARY) and Dave Lanphear (DEADPOOL, WHAT IF?) to deliver a spinning roundhouse kick to your dome. The pacing of the tale feels just right too, even for readers who are new to the story. However, fair warning, this issue will not exactly scratch your Bloodsquirt itch. Don’t fret though. We’re sure that Bloodsquirt will be back soon, and getting up to his old nonsensical tricks again.
It’s sure been fun rooting for Bloodshot ever since he “freed himself from his programming.” The anti-hero struggle is real. From one page to the next, it’s anyone guess what the Ray Garrison character will do next. The real star of this story arc though, is the Bloodshot Squad, appearing in unison for the first time, double-splash style, on pages 10 and 11. There’s a little something for everyone in this cadre of killers, especially for fans of war films set during the 2nd half of the 20th century.
Project Rising Spirit and Deathmate really earn their antagonist stripes in this issue too. Readers will be rooting against them with both vigor and vim when the final page of this issue rolls around.
FINAL SCORE: 9 / 10
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR MATURE READERS
