G-Core may be a super hero role-playing system, but it can be played with real world characters. Last Summer Dilly Green Bean Games released a fun little PDF titled Italiano Orrore: Survival Horror Volume 1. The concepts inside were all based on horror works by Lucio Fulci and other similar themes. The premise was to have players pick Generic Non-Player Characters from the G-Core PRIME book and plug in a Hero Type. These generic templates had to be normal people like doctors or students. There was no super hero types allowed, although super low level psychic powers were acceptable. The product itself walked Game Masters through a series of tables that formed the entire adventure and in some cases campaigns. Italiano Orrore was meant for one-shot games since it was most likely that the characters wouldn’t last long.
For those of you not familiar with Lucio Fulci, he was an Italian movie director known for his edgy and sometimes obscene films. Most zombie geeks know Lucio from his film Zombi 2, which included one of the most grotesque eye punctures in film history. But his other classics included the murder mystery Don’t Torture a Duckling, whose influence can be seen in BBC’s television series Broadchurch.
A year has passed since the release of Italiano Orrore and it seemed right to offer up a new twist to the product’s theme. What if the player character/characters were in over their head because of a deal? While watching American Horror Story: Coven it hit me. What if the characters had made a bargain with a demon and had been granted eternal life in exchange for ‘favors’? Angela Bassett’s character Marie Laveau was twisted in all the right ways; a Voodoo witch who must sacrifice to her demon in exchange for immortality. But what if the pact was made by just your average person and not someone who understood magic?
It was easy to see a group of players trying to find newborn children to sacrifice in order to save their own souls. Picture it: a group of friends around the table. They are neck deep in bizarre happenings and the demon calls on them. Could it be that none of the characters are what they say they are, or who? Now there is paranoia amongst the players. All while fungus nightmare zombi are under the control of the spirit of the mailman’s daughter who was killed by the milk truck and for some reason thinks the characters are responsible!
So G-Core Game Masters, it’s time to add:
Bargain of Kalfu
Power Table: 2
Free Points: 30
You were once a mortal man or woman, but you decided to play with fates and dabbled with voodoo magic. In your desperation for something more you summoned the spirit of Kalfu and struck an eternal bargain with the evil spirit. Now immortal, you live life knowing you cannot die. But you have to be careful and always cover your true nature. There are always those looking for immortality themselves. In the shadows, Kalfu lurks, seeking regular tribute in exchange for the gift he has given you. For it is a gift that can easily be taken back. It is your dark bargain that maintains you and it can also destroy you. Bargain of Kalfu have the following:
‘Life eternal, isn’t it grand?’: You have Immortality at 100 Rank. You cannot be killed. But this also comes at a price. You do not age and you outlive mortals. If you are not careful someone might notice. Maybe you pretend to be your own child or maybe you assume another identity. In the age of technology it’s becoming harder and harder to pull this off in the civilized world. To make matters worse, this life everlasting is getting to you, even if you don’t realize it. For every 100 years your character has lived, take a MINOR FLAW.
Stench of Darkness: Those who practice magic and those who are psychic automatically get an uneasy feeling when you are around. Those who can see spirits will see a strange dark shadow with white piercing eyes hovering over you. And every now and then it will look towards those who can see it and flash a smile of bloodied razor sharp teeth.
Voodoo Smart: You have the Special Focus of Voodoo Magic +30. (If you are running Italiano Orrore go ahead and don’t allow your players to have this one. Besides, magic isn’t real…right?)
‘Your soul I do own, my love’: Your soul belongs to Kalfu. You are at his constant beckoning and may not deny him a request. Sometimes it’s something as simple as a smoke and sometimes it’s something much darker. But if you fail to carry out his request, he will eat your soul.
