Repressive police states cracking down on individuality, and stopping the truly gifted from having their chance to shine is a favorite trope in American science fiction, and it looks like it’s going to be the hook for Code 8, a new film from director Jeff Chan. The teaser promises to show us a world where “4% of the population possess ‘abnormal’ abilities,” cutting quickly to a massive drone dropping a couple of (presumably) robotic cops to apprehend one of these special breed of humans, after accusing them of committing “60% of all crime.”
Shades of Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron,” Ayn Rand’s Howard Roark, or Professor Xavier’s mutants? Maybe a District 9 or Canticle for Leibowitz-style persecution? Or will we be getting something else entirely? The action-star cast, including Robbie Amell, Sung Kang, Aaron Abrams, Chad Donella, and Alfred Rubin Thompson, suggests a thrill ride — whatever it turns out to be, there’s always a place for a movie with armored cyclops robot police.
